Keynote #1 - Wednesday, 26th April 2023, 9:00-10:00
Keynote title: Living well with less energy within planetary boundariesBiography: Professor Julia Steinberger researches and teaches in the interdisciplinary areas of Ecological Economics and Industrial Ecology. Her research examines the connections between resource use (energy and materials, greenhouse gas emissions) and societal performance (economic activity and human wellbeing). She is interested in quantifying the current and historical linkages between resource use and socioeconomic parameters, and identifying alternative development pathways to guide the necessary transition to a low carbon society. She is the recipient of a Leverhulme Research Leadership Award for her research project ‘Living Well Within Limits’ investigating how universal human well-being might be achieved within planetary boundaries. She is Lead Author for the IPCC’s 6th Assessment Report with Working Group 3. Prof. Steinberger is Professor of Societal Challenges of Climate Change at the University of Lausanne since 2020. Before that, she worked at the University of Leeds, and was a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Social Ecology in Vienna (SEC), where she investigated sustainable cities and the links between material use and economic performance. She has held postdoctoral positions at the Universities of Lausanne and Zurich, and obtained her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She has published over 60 internationally peer-reviewed articles since 2009 in journals including Nature Climate Change, Nature Energy, Nature Sustainability, WIRES-Climate Change, Environmental Science & Technology and Environmental Research Letters.
Keynote #2 - Wednesday, 26th April 2023, 14:00-15:00
Keynote title: The use of CFD for better understanding of compartment fire dynamics
Biography: Bart Merci obtained his PhD in electro-mechanical engineering at Ghent University, on turbulent combustion modelling in CFD simulations non-premixed jet flames (2000). Bart Merci is now Senior Full Professor in Combustion and Fire Safety Science and Engineering (FSSE) at Ghent University (UGent). The FSSE team consists of about 15 researchers (PhD students and postdoctoral researchers). His main expertise is fluid mechanics aspects in turbulent reacting flows. He is particularly specialized in fluid mechanics aspects related to fire and smoke dynamics. He co-authored about 200 peer review papers, 1 book and several chapters in books. Since 2010 Bart Merci is the Director of the International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering on behalf of Ghent University. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Fire Safety Journal. He is guest professor at several institutes and has won multiple national and international awards. He is Co-Chair of the IAFSS Working Group MaCFP (Measurement and Computation of Fire Phenomena) and is member of multiple editorial boards and scientific committees.
Keynote #3 - Thursday, 27th April 2023, 9:00-10:00
Keynote title: Innovations in capturing detailed chemical kinetic features in Large-Eddy Simulations of turbulent combustion
Biography: Dr. Pepiot is currently an Associate Professor in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University, USA. She has a Ph.D. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, and a M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Ecole Nationale Superieure de l'Aeronautique et de l'Espace (Supaero) in Toulouse, France. Prior to joining the Cornell faculty in 2011, Dr. Pepiot held a research scientist position at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado, US, on Biomass Gasification Process Modeling and Optimization. Dr. Pepiot’s main interest is in developing new modeling and computational tools to improve the description of complex chemical processes in CFD simulations of energy systems, especially in combustion. Her current work includes the development of automatic chemical kinetic analysis and reduction tools for multi-component fuel mixtures, new algorithms to efficiently handle complex chemistry in large eddy simulation of turbulent flames, with a focus on particle PDF methods, and the use of detailed multi-scale numerical techniques to simulate reactive particle-laden flows. She is currently an associate editor for Combustion and Flame, and has an active role in the Combustion Institute leadership at the local (Eastern States), US, and International levels.
Keynote #4 - Thursday, 27th April 2023, 14:00-15:00
Keynote title: Metal energy carriers: renewable fuels for the future
Biography: L.P.H. de Goey is professor of combustion technology and dean of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, secretary of the Combustion Institute Executive Committee and chair of the board of the Metalot Innovation Center. He received his Ph.D. at the Department of Physics of the same university. He was co-editor of the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute and co-authored over 400 scientific publications. In 2010 he was received the ‘Simon Stevin Meester’ Award, this is the highest Dutch award in the area of technical sciences, in 2018 he became fellow of the CI and in 2020 he was appointed member of the EU academy of sciences and received a prestigious ERC advanced grant on metal fuel combustion.
Keynote #5 - Friday, 28th April 2023, 9:00-10:00
Keynote title: Insights into a Future running on Ammonia Combustion
Biography: He has participated as PI/Co-I in 29 industrial projects with multinationals including PEMEX, Rolls-Royce, Siemens, Ricardo, Airbus, and BP, attracting approximately £9.7M in research. He has published 178 papers (h-index 26), 46 of these specifically concerning ammonia for power. He has supervised 28 PhD students, 9 on ammonia-combustion related topics. Dr. Valera-Medina led Cardiff’s contribution to the Innovate-UK “Decoupled Green Energy” Project (2015–2018) led by Siemens and in partnership with STFC and the University of Oxford, which aimed to demonstrate the use of green ammonia produced from wind energy. He is currently PI of the project SAFE-AGT (EP/T009314/1, £1.9M) to demonstrate the use of ammonia as an efficient gas turbine fuel. He leads the combustion work package of the H2020 project FLEXnCONFU (884157), a €12.7M project conceived to demonstrate ammonia power in large turbine engines. He is also PI and co-I of projects related to ammonia for transportation, propulsion, and heat/cooling (including OceanRefuel, MariNH3, Dock2Dock, Ammonia Optimization, etc.). He has been part of various scientific boards, chairing sessions in international conferences and moderating large industrial panels on the topic of “Ammonia for Direct Use.” He supported the preparation of two Royal Society Policy Briefings on “Green Ammonia”. He is currently chair of the "Combustion and Emissions" working group of the Ammonia Energy Association, and co-Director of the Green Ammonia Working Group UK. He is the main author of the book 'Techno-economic challenges of ammonia as energy vector' (Elsevier).
